Leonard Howell is a songwriter, poet, musician, storyteller, author and actor. He was born in Saskatachewan and is of Metis heritage. He grew up in a small village called Pilot Butte situated east of Regina. Later his family homesteaded in the Spirit River region of Northern Alberta. Leonard remembers walking around Moonshine Lake and Blueberry Mountain where he was inspired to write his early poems and songs. Now Leonard spends his time in the beautiful Okanagan valley. Leonards debut release Traveller is a collection of songs he has carried as gifts of the spirit. The many sounds of horses, eagles, rattles and native drums reflect Leonard's love of the circle of life within his Nations music. Leonard donates a lot of his time to perform for such organizations as Amnesty International, World Peace Organizations, Children's Hospitals, United Way and the Variety Club. He is actively involved in Tribal Councils, Pow Wows and Medicine Wheels. Leonard gave the gift of song to the Grand Chief of the First Nations, Ovide Mercredi, at the 1993 NAJA Conference. In March of 1994 he played to over 1000 people at the Conclave of Michael in Banff, Alberta. He has entertained at various folk festivals as well as many multi-cultural events. He was a featured singer, storyteller at the Victoria First Peoples Festival, The PNE's World Aboriginal Pavilion, and The Commonwealth Games. Leonard's style has captivated audiences in schools, colleges, gatherings, parks and public events. He loves to play his drum and chant the expressions of the heart. Most of the stories are traditional as well as poems and stories from Dances With The Spirit which he plans to have published in the near future. Leonard's media shows are a sharing experience whereever he travels. He has been a guest on the CHBC TV Midday show with Mike Roberts as well as Manfred's Guitar, Rita Derkson's Christmas Special, Wintersong and the First Nation's produced KlaHowYa show on Shaw Cable. Leonard facilitates exciting workshops involving his Native Heritage through music and song in schools and colleges. |
