In 1948, I was a new born baby when we moved from northen Alberta to Hay River, N.W.T. My parents, grandparents and I were one of the first families to travel over what is now the Mackenzie Highway. The five of us travelled in an old Model A Ford with a team of dogs and several boxes of fish nets piled on top. The first winter of my life was spent in a caboose out on Great Slave Lake where my parents fished commercially. In the summer of 1998, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Mackenzie Highway. I wrote this song to commemorate that event. I dedicate this song especially to my parents but also to all other pioneers who travelled the road to Great Slave Lake when it was little more than a bush trail. |
